The Port Jackson - JD Wetherspoon

Restaurant | Bishop's Stortford | England | United Kingdom

Traditional English breakfast options

"The Port Jackson - JD Wetherspoon" in Bishop’s Stortford is a typical example of a pub from the well-known Wetherspoon chain, distinguished by its modern furnishings and its location on the picturesque banks of the River Stort. The building opened in 2014 and stands out from older Wetherspoon locations with its contemporary architecture while still maintaining the characteristic charm of a British pub. It is named after Sir George Jackson, a historical figure known for promoting the shipping development of the River Stort and for being a friend of Captain Cook—a connection that is also echoed in the names of places like Port Jackson. This historical note is reflected in artworks and information inside the pub, adding an extra cultural layer to the visit.

The menu is inspired by classic pub fare, offering a wide range of options to cater to different tastes. The "Fish and Chips," a traditional dish featuring crispy fried fish and thick chips, is particularly popular for its solid quality. The "Gourmet Burger," often served with juicy beef and a rich sauce, is also well-received by patrons. Breakfast lovers can enjoy the "Traditional Breakfast," a hearty combination of sausages, bacon, and eggs that provides a robust start to the day. For a sweet finish, the "Sticky Toffee Pudding" is often highlighted—a warm dessert with a sweet, sticky sauce that makes the perfect contrast to the hearty main courses.

The drinks menu is another hallmark of the Port Jackson. It includes a variety of real ales that change regularly and often feature local breweries, as well as international beers like the Italian Poretti, a premium lager with a distinctive flavor. The bar also offers a selection of cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages to complement the meals. A practical detail is the option to order via the Wetherspoon app, which streamlines service and modernizes the experience—especially useful when the pub is busy, which is often the case on weekends or during events.

Delicious fish and chips dishes

The atmosphere is spacious and inviting, thanks to the two-story design with a variety of seating options—from large tables for groups to quieter corners for a relaxed meal. The interior is bright and modern, with a touch of elegance that goes beyond the typical Wetherspoon design. An outdoor terrace by the riverbank invites guests to linger on pleasant days, although bringing drinks outside is somewhat restricted. The staff is often praised for their friendliness and speed, making the visit even more enjoyable. Family-friendliness is also a priority, with kid-friendly options and a relaxed environment.

Decent vegan options for a small town like this. Atmosphere was pretty mild but staff were quite friendly. Kitchen making horrible noises so I advise not to get a booth near there if you’re sensitive. Near the main train station so it’s a good place to stop off and it’s just off the towns high street. I imagine it gets loud in the evenings
